Early settlers in Massachusetts needed iron tools, nails and utensils to build their homes and plant their crops. Saugus Iron Works was the first successful iron factory in the new world. When the Saugus factory was closed in 1668, many of these workers moved to other parts of New England to forge the beginnings of America's iron and steel industry.The Works were lost to time until 1948, when archeologists began exploring and digging at the site.
